One of my favorite family activities is going to the Utah Geo-bed to get geodes. Geodes are rocks that are made of volcanic gases caught in a thick mud that formed a pocket and created a rock. The Geo-bed is on the south end of the Great Salt Lake. We drive to Tooele then go 50 miles south then 90 miles west to the middle of nowhere. It follows the old Pony Express Road. We leave in the morning and it takes about 3½ hours to get there. Dad lets us stop for drinks and candy bars at the convenience store in Tooele. When we get there, it is a desert area with brown rolling hills. We take our shovels, hammers and our buckets and go dig for them. We dig where the pink clay is. Some are easy to find and I need my dad’s help with others. I like to use the hammer to help get them out of the ground and break them open. They are usually kind of ugly on the outside but very pretty on the inside. Dad sometimes has to cut them open with his saw for us to see how pretty they are. They look like crystals and diamonds. We usually bring back at least one 5 gallon bucket full! While we are out there, we have seen antelope, lizards, jack rabbits, cottontails, and snakes. On our way home, we get to stop for food! My mom is always loves the geodes but she doesn’t’ like them all over her flower beds even if they are really pretty! I like finding geodes and spending time with my dad and brother. Mom and Morgan have fun shopping while we are gone!
